World First for Lakeside Raceway

From:                   Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc.

Issue Date:          1 May, 2003
Topic:                  Lakeside International Raceway

Australian motor racing circuit, Lakeside International Raceway has become the first motor racing facility in the world to be granted full permanent heritage listing.

Located just north of Brisbane and owned by the Pine Rivers Shire Council (rayb@prsc.qld.gov.au), the Queensland Heritage Council (www.epa.qld.gov.au) voted to preserve the cultural heritage of the 42 year old site on 29 April, 2003.

President of the Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc., Ian Milton, said this about the verdict:
"We certainly view this as positive and it's encouraging to see that people outside the motor racing fraternity can understand the historical importance and cultural value of Lakeside to the community beyond the [Pine Rivers] Shire."

"Now that we have a clear direction, we're looking forward to working with the Pine Rivers Shire Council to return motor racing to Lakeside and develop the facility so it can realize its full potential, like the Bathurst City Council."

Former Managing Director of the Lakeside complex, Mr. Geoff Sakzewski had this to say:
"I've always supported the Heritage Listing on the basis that it was supported by the community. Heritage Listing is a victory for motorsport, but more than that, it's vindication for the all the people, who over the generations, have volunteered their blood, sweat and tears to create one of the world's best motor racing circuits."

GOAL

LMRE’s goal is to re-instate motor racing at Lakeside International Raceway as soon as possible and assist whichever body will best achieve that outcome.

 NEXT MEETING

The next meeting of the Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc. will be on Tuesday, 6 May at the Pine Rivers Junior Rugby Football Club on Mundin St, Petrie at 7:30PM.
