Council Confusion Over Lakeside
EVENT:
Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts,
Inc. Meeting
LOCATION:
Royal Mill Hotel, Kallangur
ISSUE DATE:
Monday, 14
April, 2003
Documents tabled at the latest meeting of the
Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc. confirm that the Pine Rivers Shire
Council appears to be confused about
its own position regarding its latest acquisition, the Lakeside Motorsport
Complex.
In a 1998 letter from former PRSC Chief Executive Officer, John Matthews, states the Council's position as follows: "Council regards to the motor sport activities carried out on the land in accordance with the relevant statutes to be a valuable tourist attraction, job creation activity and sporting venue." The letter was in support of Lakeside's application to the State Government for funding through its Sports Facilities Program 1999-2001. Meanwhile, in a meeting last week with new PRSC CEO, Ray Burton, Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc members were told that the Council did not want motor racing at its recently purchased $600,000 race track. In 42 years of operation, Lakeside International Raceway has always been financed by the clubs, competitors, fans and sponsors and while qualifying for funding, has never received any financial support from the State or Federal governments. In other news, Manager for Projects and Development, Andy Opanowycz, stated that the PRSC anticipates that the Queensland Heritage Council will announce its decision regarding permanent status of the Lakeside site once it receives the independent assessor's report at its next meeting on 29 April, 2003. More information regarding heritage listing can be obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency at www.env.qld.gov.auThe next meeting of the Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc. is on Tuesday, 22 April at 7:30PM, at the Pine Rivers Junior Rugby League Club, Mundin Street, Petrie. |
