Council Considers Lakeside Status
EVENT:
Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts (Inc) Meeting
LOCATION: Port Royal Mill Hotel, Kallangur
ISSUE DATE: Wednesday, 2 April 2003
Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts (Inc) met last week as the
Pine Rivers Shire Council decided to withdraw their Expressions of Interest until after an
independent assessor rules on the heritage listing status of the Lakeside Raceway
site.
The following statements are from the PRSC's minutes taken
during their coordination meeting held on the Monday, 24
March, 2003:
"Council notes legal
advice has been received that Council should not take any action in relation to
Lakeside until the heritage listing issue has been dealt with."
"This matter is to be
held in abeyance pending a further report to the Strategic and Commercial Services
Committee as to the Council's position in relation to the heritage listing."
President of Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts (Inc),
Mr. Ian Milton said, "This is an encouraging indication
that Pine Rivers Shire Council is cognisant of its responsibilities and we feel that this
may be the first positive step toward re-establishing motor racing at Lakeside."
LMRE (Inc)
is a grass-roots group of motorsport spectators, officials and competitors with the
shared goal to re-instate motor racing at Lakeside International Raceway as soon as
possible and assist whichever body will best achieve that outcome.
The Office of the Honourable Dean Wells MP, Minister for the
Environment, which is responsible for cultural heritage matters, provided the
following explanation as part of a response to a supporter's letter in early
March.
"Objections to the permanent entry of the place (Lakeside) in the Heritage
Register have been received. Consequently, an independent expert assessor has been
appointed, in accordance with Part 4 of the Act, to enquire into the objections and report
to the Queensland Heritage Council. After considering the assessor's report, the Heritage
Council will decide whether or not to proceed with the permanent entry of the place in the
Heritage register."
Replying to the same letter, Nita Cunningham MP, Minister for Local Government
and Planning went further to say, "Once a place is permanently entered on the
Register, anyone wishing to alter it substantially, such as renovations, demolition, or
construction work, must get QHC (Queensland Heritage Council) approval."
