Heritage Night for Lakeside

From:                  Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc.

Issue Date:         13 May, 2004
Topic:                  Lakeside International Raceway

Brisbane, Queensland – Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts is taking its next meeting to inner Brisbane to reach more of the motorsport faithful, share the history, and discuss the opportunity to return motor racing to Lakeside International Raceway.

The club has received support from car and bike racers around the world. And while they react with disappointment upon hearing the current circumstances, they are equally quick to offer assistance and share fond memories from the first four decades of motor racing at Lakeside. LMRE hopes to discover more heroic trackside stories that were a common sight at the heritage listed circuit and defined the culture of motor racing in Queensland.

The best story will be published on the website (www.lakesideraceway.com) and enthusiasts from all disciplines of motorsport are encouraged to bring along items of memorabilia for display.

The casual meeting will be hosted by the Motorcycle Sportsmen Club at 35 Crosby Rd, Albion on Monday, 31 May at 7:00pm.

Food and drinks will be available with $5 pizza and a cash bar.

LMRE president, Ian Milton said,

"It's an opportunity to make ourselves more accessible so that people can see for themselves who we are, ask us questions and offer any suggestions they may have."

Please find below a story of Jim Clark competing in the Tasman Series at Lakeside by David McKay:

"I was looking forward to watching Clark in action at Lakeside where the organising club's patron, Sid Sakzewski, had put up a thousand quid inducement for the first 100 mph lap. The best 2.5 litre racers in the world had all had a shot at it over the past couple of years - Brabham, McLaren, Surtees, as well as local flyers Youll, Stillwell, and Matich - and the present record stood at 57.7 set by Matich a year ago.

With Moss no longer racing, Sid's grand looked pretty safe until Clark came on the scene and immediately started lapping in 56's, finishing with a neat 55.0. The "straight" at Lakeside has a definite corner at three-quarter distance which warranted the respect it was was accorded by the 2.5 litre brigade .There was always the reassuring momentary lift off the throttle, no safety fences then and an off-line car would somersault forever and a day given the usual entry speed of 145 mph.

So it came as a shock to hear the bellow of the Lotus exhaust on full song past the control tower and on through this dangerous corner. I had been walking back from the pits to the paddock and remember stopping and listening. Surely not on full throttle.

I waited for the dark blue helmet to appear again, no doubt about it, no sign of a comforting lift, foot flat all the way. As if to prove it, two small puffs of dust hung in the air, one where Clark's left front wheel had clipped the entry on the inside and another further on where the right rear had been fractionally wide at the exit. Bloody hell !"

###

Objective

LMRE’s goal is to re-instate club level motor racing at Lakeside International Raceway as soon as possible and assist whichever body will best achieve that outcome. We are not seeking the future ownership or management of the circuit.

Next Meeting

Monday, 31 May 2004 @ 7:00pm at Motorcycle Sportsmen Clubhouse - 35 Crosby RdAlbion.
