Lakeside Trust On Hold From: Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc.
Issue Date:

April, 2004
Topic: Lakeside International Raceway
Brisbane, Queensland – A letter from the Pine Rivers Shire Council formally recognizes the "merit" of the ideas put forward by Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, but clearly outlines their intention to undertake a risky and expensive court action in an attempt to remove the heritage listing from Lakeside International Raceway.
PRSC is yet to set a start date for legal proceedings, but a victory is expected to see the resumption of the rezoning process and an end to motor racing at the facility.
"I think they've missed the point of creating a Trust. If they create a Trust first, they'll nullify all their own complaints surrounding heritage listing - it simply won't be their problem anymore" said LMRE president Ian Milton.
However, if Council's appeal is unsuccessful, then locals believe the Council will be looking to transfer responsibility for the facility as quickly as possible and the Trust will be the best option to satisfy all stakeholders.
Currently, PRSC only sees value in the Trust as a fall back position if their appeal fails, nevertheless, it is investigating the legalities of two options for forming a Trust.
Chief Executive Officer Ray Burton described the options as, "Council retaining ownership of the site and leasing the site on a long term basis to a Trust set up with specific operational parameters, or Council developing a Trust Deed through which Council transfers ownership of the site under specific conditions."
LMRE president, Ian Milton said,

Objective
LMRE’s goal is to re-instate club level motor racing at Lakeside International Raceway as soon as possible and assist whichever body will best achieve that outcome. It is not within the club's charter to seek the possible ownership or any future management rights of Lakeside International Raceway. Next Meeting Monday, 10 May 2004 @ 7:30pm at Pine Rivers Junior Rugby Football Club - Mundin Street, Petrie. |
