EPA Press Release

Lakeside Heritage Appeal Resolved - 7 October, 2005

Lakeside International Raceway will be removed from the Queensland Heritage Register following an agreement ordered by consent in the Planning & Environment Court today.

Pine Rivers Shire Council filed an appeal on 11 June 2003 against the permanent entry of the Lakeside International Raceway in the Queensland Heritage Register.

Under the terms of an agreement between the Queensland Heritage Council and Pine Rivers Shire Council, Lakeside International Raceway will be removed from the Queensland Heritage Register by 31 October, 2005.

Heritage Council Chair David Eades said the Heritage Council had agreed to remove the former raceway from the register and allow time to find a suitable use for the site on the condition that the Pine Rivers Shire Council retain it and ensure its heritage areas were protected.

"The Heritage Council is satisfied with the terms of the agreement which require that Pine Rivers Shire Council ensures the significant elements of the raceway are not destroyed, damaged or removed for the next five years," Mr Eades said.

"This will allow time to identify a suitable use for the raceway."

"After extensive consideration and independent external assessment, the Heritage Council concluded that while Lakeside has heritage significance, it is primarily at a local level."

"The Heritage Council is conscious of the community interest in Lakeside and has negotiated with the Pine Rivers Shire Council to protect important elements of the raceway's heritage values to allow time for community engagement."

"The Heritage Council is confident that the local shire and community can work together under the terms of this agreement to find a new use for Lakeside International Raceway that will acknowledge its heritage values," he said.

"Council will also be required to engage a qualified heritage photographer to create a photographic record of the site."

Pine Rivers Shire will have until the end of February 2006 to seek expressions of interest from the community regarding future use for the site.
