Stay of Execution for Lakeside Heritage Listing From: Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc.
Issue Date:
9
September, 2005
Topic: Lakeside International Raceway
Brisbane, Queensland - In a surprise move, the Heritage Council was granted an adjournment for their case regarding the heritage listing of Lakeside International Raceway until 7 October, 2005. In the Planning and Environment Court this morning, Letitia Marshall for the State Government said, "We are in the final stages of negotiation and request an adjournment."
It was expected that the Pine Rivers Shire Council was going to have an agreement with the State Government ratified by the Court. It would see the 44 year old race track stripped of its unique heritage listing, eventually re-zoned and the PRSC could fulfil its goal to permanently stop motor racing at the only facility on the northside of Brisbane.
Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts' president, Ian Milton was present and had this response,
While it is not clear what caused the deal to be delayed, it is certain that the fight to preserve Lakeside as a club-level motor racing circuit and a means for get 'hooning' kids off the streets is not over yet.
Road accident victim's group Citizens Against Road Slaughter (C.A.R.S.) supports LMRE's efforts to use Lakeside as a safe AND ONLY alternative to hooning on public streets for kids living north of the Brisbane River.
LMRE has long suggested that the Council and the State Government work together to form a Trust, similar to other sporting venues such as Lang Park and the Gabba, for the future management of Lakeside International Raceway.
