Revheads & Ratepayers Rally to Open Lakeside

From:                  Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc.

Issue Date:         6 August, 2007
Topic:                  Lakeside International Raceway

Brisbane, Australia - Motorsport fans and Pine Rivers Shire ratepayers are joining together on Sunday, 12 August to demand that Lakeside International Raceway finally be re-opened to the whole community. They are holding a motorcycle and car parade from Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens which will culminate in a vehicle display across the road from Lakeside Raceway.

Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts president Ian Milton said,

"We had two goals in mind for the Save Lakeside Cruise in Show. First, our sport was decimated by Lakeside's closure and its an opportunity for people in our sport to get together after many, many years. Second, we wanted to demonstrate how a motorsport event at Lakeside can be very civilized while giving people in the area an opportunity to show their support."

Moreover, Lakeside supporters are concerned that the forthcoming council amalgamations and elections have paralyzed the PRSC and their process to re-open the only motorsport facility on the north side of Brisbane.

Mr. Milton expanded,

"We can understand some councilors hesitance, given the recent pressure tactics from a radical minority, but the council has spent millions of our dollars on Lakeside over the past 5 years and we just think it's about time we ratepayers saw some bang for our buck."

Road accident victims support group Citizens Against Road Slaughter explains why it believes the re-opening of Lakeside Raceway will benefit the wider community. Spokesperson Fred Banks said,

"With the State Government's new licensing laws coming out, places like Lakeside are even more important, as they are the only real, legal outlet for younger drivers and higher powered vehicles. Better to have appropriate safety and standards in place than be racing on public roads."

Businesses on Brisbane's north side have also been negatively impacted by its indefinite closure, forcing many in the automotive industry to look outside the region.

Driver training expert Joel Neilsen said,

"Our company, Safe Driver Training will train 3500 students this year and has received overwhelming interest from 18 schools in the Pine Rivers, Caboolture and Redcliffe Shire region. Most have already said they would prefer to use Lakeside instead of driving across Brisbane to Ipswich."

The car and motorcycle show will be held on the property of Lakeside Rd neighbour Chris Sexton. He says the delays have cost him money.

"This state of limbo has devalued my property by hundreds of thousands of dollars. When Lakeside was operating I had dozens of offers, but since I had it on the market I didn't get one offer in 18 months. People looking to buy near the circuit are afraid to invest in case the council doesn't deliver."

Lakeside neighbour and LMRE vice president Warren Smith said,

"We moved here specifically to be closer to Lakeside and we have many other local residents in our membership who did the same. This weekend should give councilors who are wavering some confidence that for every person who doesn't want Lakeside re-opened there's another 100 voters who do."
