Community Backs Lakeside Raceway

10/04/08 Brisbane, Queensland -  Recent Queensland local council elections have delivered a landslide victory for supporters of Lakeside Raceway. Visionary backers of the historic circuit were re-elected to positions on the newly amalgamated Moreton Bay Regional Council (formerly Caboolture, Pine Rivers and Redcliffe) while those opposed were not returned to office.

Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts president Ian Milton said,

"The election results clearly show that the vast majority of residents understand the long term economic and social benefits Lakeside Raceway offers to the community and now these benefits can be extended to all the 340,000 odd people living in the newly formed council's area."

LMRE would like to congratulate Mayor Allan Sutherland and Deputy Mayor Greg Chippendale (Div 3) and in particular former Pine Rivers Shire councillors and supporters - David Dwyer (Div 7), Mick Gillam (Div 8), Mike Charlton (Div 9), Brian Battersby (Div 10) and Bob Millar (Div 11).

Just as importantly, we would like to congratulate Cr Gary Parsons (Div 1), Cr Chris Whiting (Div 2), Cr Julie Greer (Div 4), Cr James Houghton (Div 5), Cr Rae Frawley (Div 6) and Cr Adrian Raedel (Div 12) and offer our club's assitance regarding any matter surrounding Lakeside Raceway.

After six years, Sunday 6 April heralded the return to racing to the iconic circuit. A wide variety of 50 cars entered the low key event and spectators were treated to an entertaining days racing for just $10 admission.

One of the main priorities for the day was to prove that racing could be conducted within the new noise limits. A small number of cars were recalled to the pits for exceeding the new noise emission levels, but most were able to easily make necessary changes.

After being retested, they were able to continue to compete. Those unable to comply were not permitted to back onto the circuit. Competitors agreed that this action was appropriate and necessary to ensure that club level motor racing at Lakeside has a future.

LMRE member, Gary Bailey reported that the meeting was conducted in an orderly and professional manner. He went on to say that all of the competitors enjoyed a great day's racing, felt that in general the track was "still in good order" and appreciated the recent refurbishment of the pit area.

Many Councillors from the newly elected Moreton Bay Regional Council attended and were impressed with both the professional conduct of the meeting and the world class noise management practices in place at Lakeside.

LMRE president Ian Milton said,
"Congratulations to John Tetley on the success of this meeting. It vindicates our collective efforts over the last six years for the return of club level racing to Lakeside and demonstrates that racing can be conducted in a neighbourly manner".
However, one legal matter still remains afoot. A small group of residents led by Lake Kurwongbah water-skiing enthusiast, Ron Curtis, have an application before the Planning and Environment District Court, which is to be reviewed by the court on 18 April, 2008.

Despite proclamations by councillors and the former Pine Rivers CEO that their "case was not strong", LMRE will continue to monitor the situation.

Call for State Government Motorsport Plan

Brisbane, Queensland – Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts, Inc. made a submission to the Queensland State Government's Office of Urban Management this week requesting that a strategic plan be developed, as part of the south east Queensland Regional Plan, to address the burgeoning problems associated with 'hooning', trail-bikes and jet skis. The group says these problems are a direct result of a lack of dedicated motorsport infrastructure in the south east region. LMRE asks that Lakeside International Raceway be re-opened to ease the burden on communities north of the Brisbane river.

Long Lease Locks in Lakeside !

18/12/07 Brisbane, Queensland -  Supporters of Queensland's Lakeside Raceway received an early Christmas present this year with the Pine Rivers Shire Council and Wrexmere Pty Ltd (Queensland Raceway) signing off on a long term lease to operate the historic circuit on Brisbane's north side.

The agreement for 30 years, with an option for 10 years, obtained State Government Ministerial approval and will insure the facility celebrates its 50th anniversary on 19 March 2011.

Lakeside Motor Racing Enthusiasts president Ian Milton said,

"We're delighted and relieved by the news, but if we want to get on the track, everyone will have to pitch in and do their part - there's no more excuses for sitting on the sidelines."

When asked what the major challenges were to getting club-level motor racing back to Lakeside, John Tetley of Queensland Raceway said,

"We have all the usual major project hassles including red tape, availability of scarce resources, etc."

Mr Tetley said that an initial $1.2 million has already been secured to invest on rebuilding infrastructure and,

"The rest will depend on how wisely we invest the initial capital input and how many people come and spend their money there."

"We're targeting and hoping to re-open the driver training in February or March next year. Racing, maybe June, depending on a lot of variables including re-education of competitors and neighbour management."

Pine Rivers Shire Councillor Mike Charlton was very excited to declare the situation as "all systems go!" He described the council's vision for Lakeside as,

"Preservation of an iconic motorsport site embracing historic, commercial and club motorsport activities, combined with life-saving driver and rider education and community events."

Cr Charlton said that a legal action in the Planning & Environment Court between the PRSC and Mr Ron Curtis is "unlikely to delay" and is confident in their legal advice because it is "tried and tested" law. Last month a local newspaper article revealed that people had been listed as co-applicants without their permission. The action has been adjourned until 23 January, 2008.

Mr Milton pointed out the significance of events,

"An historic moment is occurring for the people of Queensland, and particularly the motorsport community, because I can think of no other example of a motor racing circuit in Australia being brought back from the brink like Lakeside."

"On behalf of LMRE members, I would like to extend a sincere invitation to anyone who has a passion for motorsport to help us get this deal over the line by registering on-line to help reconstruct Lakeside. You don't need to be an engineer, just bring the right attitude.
